Door locks are one of the most important features to choose for your home, since they add security, functionality, and aesthetics. From padlocks to smart locks, there are different types of locksets for different rooms in your home, based on their functionality and ease of access. With locks that can be opened through an app, and several other cool features, door locks are increasingly getting technologically advanced and innovative. Here are 10 different types of door locks for various doors in your home.

Mortise Locks

Mortise locks are some of the most reliable main door lock types since they come with a complex internal lock system including knobs and levers. They are threaded and come in both light and heavy duty styles.

Padlocks

The most common main door lock types we've all used for years are the padlocks. Since they're portable and not attached to a specific door,  it makes them an easy choice for a wide variety of doors. While they also come in combination styles that require you to set a specific password, keyed padlocks are the best for home usage since they're sturdier and harder to break into. These are best used on backdoors or outdoor rooms.

Keypad Locks

One of the more modern locksets available today are keypad locks that use a numerical keypad to lock and unlock instead of a key. They're typically fitted along with a mortise lock, knob lock or a deadbolt lock to get the mechanism working. They can be battery operated, or mechanical, and also allow for multiple unlocking codes. They're great for rooms that need additional security or perfect for your main door.

Cam Locks

Cam locks are typically used for doors, display cabinets, kitchen cabinets, work desks and even vending machines. They have an attached 'cam' or arm that rotates to lock and unlock doors. They look compact, and come in a bunch of different hardware if you're particular about a certain look.

Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt Locks have a strong and unique knob turning mechanism without any spring that makes them secure against physical prying, tools or battering. They come in single, double, and vertical variants, with single-cylinder deadbolts—single cylinder deadbolt locks can be opened with a key from one side while a double cylinder can be opened from both sides. Vertical deadbolts are more resistant to prying, since the lock moves up and down instead of sideways.

Smart Locks

We like the ease that comes with smart locks, since they can easily be operated through your phone. While having a key or a keypad feature, they can also be controlled via a key fob or a phone. Just ensure they're connected to the nearest source of WiFi or Bluetooth, while you replace batteries regularly.

Knob Locks

Knob locks can be installed onto existing door frames with little to no effort since the lock cylinder for knob locks is located in the door knob itself. For this reason, it is recommended that they're used in the interiors of a home, like your bedroom or study, as they can be broken into with basic tools like a hammer or wrench. They look aesthetic, and you can customise your door knob locks to go with the rest of your decor.

Handle Set Lock

Lever handle locks are great for home interiors, like bedrooms, or a study room. They come with a push-down handle and are simpler to open as compared to knob handles. They can also be customised as per the colour scheme in your home, since they come in a wide variety of styles. They're also ideal for thinner doors that can't accommodate a deeper lockset.

Door Chain

Door chain type locks are a design you may have spotted at hotel rooms often. Aside from being fitted with a regular knob lock, lock and chains provide additional security, to take a peek at who's outside your door. They're great especially if you live with pets or kids, so you don't have to open the complete door every time someone knocks.

Rim Door Lock

One of the oldest types of door locks, rim door locks have a box that's mounted on top of a door or wall, fitted with a deadbolt lock inside. The box is typically made of stainless steel, is easy to install and great for commercial use too. If you live in an older building, consider setting a rim door lock for additional security.
