What's The Unexpected Red Theory? And Why I'm Considering Adding It To My Home

Red isn’t a colour I usually go for, but a few months ago, I was so drawn by it, and funnily enough, my phone heard me and validated my thoughts. I came across what is easily one of my favourite home decor trends, the Unexpected Red Theory. The term was coined by TikTok creator and interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon, which basically centres around adding a pop of red in any corner of your home (even if it feels absurd) to instantly elevate the space.

If you're confused, trust us when we say that it'll all makes sense when you see it. You can use any shade of red — as bright or as deep — to make any part of your home automatically look better and elevated.

It can be as simple as adding a lamp, or as complicated as painting your entrance door red (which we have witnessed right here in Delhi). Red as a colour is bright, fiery, and attention-grabbing, and here are a few items to add to your home if you're putting this theory to test, like me.

Crockery

If you want to test the waters with the fire and warmth of red, then your best bet is red crockery. Get yourself some good-quality red plates and bowls that will elevate your dining table. Alternatively, you could get yourself a red fruit bowl if you're looking for something that can be kept on your table for a prolonged period of time. If the budget allows, my pick would be to go for a red Le Creuset.

Lighting is an interesting category to work with when it comes to home. A few months ago, I had the chance to meet many interior designers and architects who agreed that lighting can make or break any area of your home. Through lighting you can grab attention, make harsh spaces soft and add depth too. Adding a lamp is a functional idea, but adding a red lamp makes sure that your space looks great even when it's not in use.

Going for a red shelf seems daring, but it's also one of my favourite ways to incorporate a pop of colour. This one will give your space an immediate focal point, and can be as big or as small as you like. It's bound to fetch you compliments for your house.

If you've been thinking of getting yourself accent furniture, then a red table seems to be the perfect pick. It's easy, functional and moveable. In my opinion, a red table will be easy on your budget as well, as the focus is on the colour more than the design. IKEA has some great affordable and durable options.

Adding red chairs is a maximalist idea but can do wonders. You don’t have to change all your chairs too, just one or two to see how it looks. However, I'm confident you'll add one in every room once you try it.

I heard somewhere that the way you decorate your walls is an immediate reflection of your life. Did I just make this up? Maybe. But there's some truth to that statement. What you choose to showcase on your walls is what interests you and quite literally how you want your surroundings to be. Adding art that majorly red or even with just red wooden frames will make your walls art stand out and even upgrade the look of your walls.
