Leave Gokarna Behind For The Unspoilt Beaches At This Charming Coastal Town

Ten-Second Takeaway

The crowds have taken over Gokarna in the past few years or so and if you are looking for an escape route, nearby Ankola it is. Perfect for beach walks, picnics and Insta-worthy clicks.

What Makes It Awesome

The sun-kissed beaches of Gokarna promise plenty for the average beach lover. But if you want more, especially, if you are looking for hidden and untouched stretches of sea and sand — we recommend a trip to the coastal village of Ankola. A short 30-odd minute drive away from the bustling Gokarna, Ankola is dotted with beaches where you can spend a day picnicking. Ankola is also perfect for beach hopping so if you plan to walk along the coastline, don’t forget a sturdy pair of beach slippers or even hiking shoes for those of you keen on working up a sweat.

Surrounded by the hills, carpeted in green, Nadibhag Beach is perfect for just perching on the rocks that jut out of the sea while catching a sunset. In the early morning, you can watch fishermen readying their boats for the day. If you prefer something more secluded head over to Honey Beach. The Belekeri Beach that sits just outside Ankola is also a popular stop. The river Gangavalli separates Ankola from sunny Gokarna. And it is a great spot for a getaway if you prefer something slightly different. The river snakes its way through thick foliage so keep your camera handy to snap up a few gorgeous clicks. We also recommend taking a trek uphill to see where the river meets the vast sea.

What Could Be Better

Largely undiscovered, you won’t find many accommodation options in Ankola (except for the Honey Beach resort) so it’s best to be based out of Gokarna and make a day trip. You’ll also have to leave behind your bathing suit. But do pack a large picnic basket and plenty of beach towels.
