Shortcut

A tiny little store in the bylanes of Kammanahalli, Cutinha’s Konkan Store stocks up traditional masalas from across the Konkan coast, fragrant spices and homemade snacks.

Spice and all things nice

As you slip out of your shoes at the doorstep, you get the first whiff of the spices. Step in and you’ll see rows of short, wooden barrels filled with aromatic cloves, cardamoms, coriander powder. organic bird eye chillies and turmeric. There’s also a wide shelf that’s lined with baskets. While one is filled with Bafat Powder (a popular Mangalore spice mix) and masala for a fiery Mangalorean fish curry or a Ghee Roast, another has Goan meat and fish spice blends. From Maharashtra, there’s their famed Goda masala and a selection of Malwani homemade seasonings.

If you prefer something that’s more ‘ready-to-eat’, there’s a rack full of chakalisladdoos, chips, and Bebinca that traditional Konkani houses make. You can also buy brown rice and dried fish (two Mangalorean meal staples) at the store.

Essential liquids

Mini cans of coconut oils, homemade apple cider vinegar, and organic honey are also on the menu at the store. Suffering from aches and pains? Pick up one of the Ayurvedic oils or herbal preparations that Cutinha’s brings in from Mangalore. They have medications for everything from migraine to piles (ulp!).

Navya considers herself to be the Cassandra of the 21st century – no one ever listens to the wisdom that she so willingly imparts. This is the only Greek tragedy element in her otherwise happy life. She’s got her Husband Charming, has perfected the art of sarcasm, is always fed copious amounts of good food, and is well on her way to self-actualization.
