A legendary hotel, from the time of the British, East End Hotel, sits pretty on Stuart Hill, in Madikeri in Coorg. Simple and homely, this place also has a restaurant that is great for local food and drinks.

What Is It?

A massive property on Stuart Hill, just at the beginning of the town of Madikeri, East End hotel has been around for ages. And really, not much has changed. It still has the low roof, thatched in parts, red oxide floors, and typical home-style beds, antique furniture and a large courtyard that doubles up as a dining area under the stars at night.

Who Is It For?

Not quite ideal for backpackers as it’s not a hostel, nor for those looking for a luxury stay, East End is like a homestay but with serivce of a hotel. It’s perfect for budget travellers, looking to stay close enough to town, yet not in the middle of the drama.

Tell Us About The Experience

It’s a very simple hotel, that keeps things classic and unpretentious. Expect old school bathrooms with a half wall cordoning off the shower area, double beds that are comfy but not springy and large fans that will remind you of the early 70s. But what is great about this place is the charm. And a good 50 odd years of it. You can still check in here, leave the room door open and no one will even think of going in.

I also love this place for the vast space it has. Perfect for a game of cricket or good old lagori with the gang. It’s also walking distance from town – the museum, fort, Raja’s Seat and the liqour shop {it’s right next door}. So, location also makes this one a winner.

Food For Thought

If old-world charm hasn’t won you over yet, maybe delicious Coorg food will. Unfortunately, they don’t have pandi curry any more. But the thali — vegetarian or chicken, is still divine. Order the chicken curry too as it’s spicy and yummy. Biryanis of all kinds are good too. But don’t forget to have the dosas — stuffed with keema, korma and other interesting fillings. For breakfast, look no further than the masala dosa.

At night, when the bar open, bring the plastic or cane chairs to the courtyard and just enjoy the cool breeze. Since it’s Coorg, you best have whisky, brandy or dark rum in your hand.
