Ten-second takeaway

Free speech takes centrestage at Nirankusha: Loud and Clear, a weeklong festival that has public talks, workshops and engaging performances lined up for you.

Speak free

Keeping in mind the current political climate and the constant suppression of freedom of speech in the country, Nirankusha: Loud and Clear is a weeklong festival that intends to create a space for free expression. Organised by Maraa {a city-based media and arts collective}, in collaboration with Alternative Law Forum {a collective for alternate lawyering and critical research} and Pedestrian Pictures {a media activist organisation}, the festival promises to get you pondering with public talks, workshops and performances. So, relevant issues like right to dissent, censorship, identity and discrimination will all be a part of this year's program. Encouraging conversations between different groups, they will also focus on giving students a chance to voice their opinions.

Fest highlights

While Day One will have a public talk {'Unlatching Expression, Queering Speech'} by lawyer and LGBTQ activist, Danish Sheikh, and Day Two a session on law and literature, we suggest you look out for 'Voices from the Belly', scheduled for two days {March 25 and 28}. Featuring artistes all the way from Chattisgarh, Maharashtra and Goa along with Sumathi Murthy and Indian Folk Band from Karnataka, protest music, poetry and theatre are what you can expect at this event.

'Dehumanising Universities', a workshop with students, will delve into aspects of institutional decline and the question of reservation. 'Fearless expression, Fearless speech' is a session of two public talks with panelists {includes activists, academics and media personnel from across the country} discussing the construction of nationalism and trial by media.
