The information in this post might be outdated

There are travellers and then are those who will travel many a mile for food. If you count yourself in the latter category, then, this list is just for you. Next time, you are planning a one-day getaway from the city don’t simply explore the hills and rivers but sign up for unique food experiences at your destination. Here are the must-trys:

Masala Dosa At Mysore

When your tummy demands a very special breakfast, embark on a road trip to the royal city of Mysore. Once there head straight to the original Mylari Hotel {near Nazarbad} for their crisp, golden masala dosas that are topped with dollops of melting butter. Gayatri Tiffin Room is a a popular choice. When you are done you can take in the city’s many sights before returning for round two!

Thatte Idli At Bidadi

Whether you are spending the day at the city’s favourite amusement park, Wonderla, or are just out for a drive – don’t miss the Thatte Idlis at Bidadi. Located right on the arterial Mysore-Bangalore highway is Sree Renukambha Thatte Idli, a restaurant that sees an endless stream of hungry foodies who swing by for its fluffy, plate-shaped idlis. We also love the Thatte Idlis at Hotel Guru that come with a fiery red chutney and aloo sagu.

Vadas in Maddur

Done with Bidadi? Then, drive onwards to Maddur for their famed vadas. Here, there’s no better place than the Maddur Tiffany’s, that’s a popular haunt with the movers and shakers of the Kannada film industry and the local political circle, to try the Maddur Vada. The crunchy, slightly chewy, vadas speckled with slivers of fried up onion is just what you need when you have comfort food on your mind.

Fish Fry at Krishnagiri Dam

Skip town and head past Hosur to reach the Krishnagiri Dam, a picnic spot that’s popular with the locals. While we don’t think much of the dam as a picnic haunt, we’ll happily try the fish stalls that have mushroomed all around the dam. The locals fry up the catch of the day in a robust masala that’s heavy on chilly. You can wolf this down with plate of humble sambhar and rice.

Benne Dosa At Davangere

Load up on the calories at Davangere with their delicious Benne Masala Dosas. While the journey will take you a little longer {around 4.5 hours}, the butter-soaked dosas are totally worth your time. Try these at the Sri Guru Kotteshwara Benne Dosa Hotel – a tiny, no-frills restaurant that’s been around for decades.

Military-Style Feast At Srirangapatna

The Mysore-Bangalore Highway is great for South Indian, vegetarian staples there are not many restaurants that cater to the meat lovers. But stop by Srirangapatna and you are in for a feast. Jai Bhuvaneswari Military Hotel will please the carnivore in you and serves up rustic meals that includes ragi balls, Mutton Chops, and Brain Fry.

Biryani At Ambur

Eat like the Nawabs at the city of Ambur, that sits between Bangalore and Chennai. First introduced to the kitchens of the Nawabs of Arcot, a couple of centuries ago, the Ambur Biryani is now a crowd favourite. You can try the lightly-spiced, short-grained creation at Star Biryani, the oldest biryani outlet here.

Navya considers herself to be the Cassandra of the 21st century – no one ever listens to the wisdom that she so willingly imparts. This is the only Greek tragedy element in her otherwise happy life. She’s got her Husband Charming, has perfected the art of sarcasm, is always fed copious amounts of good food, and is well on her way to self-actualization.
