Ten-Second Takeaway

With some hits and misses, Punjab Grill's special menu for its fifth anniversary has old-school dishes in new avatars. Plus, cocktails with a desi twist.

Birthday Specials

The fine-dining restaurant, Punjab Grill {in Koramangala} just turned five and they're going all-out to celebrate the occasion. Roping in chef Nishant Choubey, executive chef of Dusit Devarana, New Delhi to craft and curate a special weekend menu, they have brought on board a bunch of revamped desi dishes and cocktails for you to try out.

The Old-Fashioned Chai {a take on the Old Fashioned cocktail, with whiskey and orange juice} or the Kahwa Lemon Ice Tea with a hint of cardamom make for a good start, although we'd have liked some more alcohol in the drinks. We also spotted options such as Aam Panna Martini and Paan and Gulab Martini. The Fire Roasted Cottage Cheese was a nice mix of sweet and spicy flavours, thanks to the topping of orange sriracha marmalade. While the Mathri Strips combined old-school spiced potato and pumpkin murabba on a flaky pastry strip, the Magaz {brain cutlet} catered to offal lovers. What really stole the show for us was the Raan, a portion of lamb roast that truly melted in the mouth.

More On Offer

Give the Pathar Ke Gosht {lamb cooked on stone} and the Soft Shell Crab {which was too salty when we tried} a miss, and instead try the juicy Tandoori Mustard Prawns or the bite-sized Keema Kachoris. While the Rajma Khichdi with homemade Wadi sounded promising, it turned out to be a tad too salty, much to our disappointment. However, the Hyderabadi Nihari — a flavourful mutton curry — served with rotis, almost made up for it. For dessert, there's Pan Kulfi on offer, served with tiny bits of Gulkhand Chikkis.

So, We're Thinking…

The service was slightly slow and there were dishes that didn't quite cut it for us. But if you're up for some fusion flavours with popular dishes, give the special menu a try over the weekend. Also, since it's desi khana, we suggest you don't bother with counting calories.
