UshaMakes is an initiative to support Usha's local tailoring business. She makes cotton reusable face masks.
Here's the story behind UshaMakes !!
Usha never had the opportunity to go to a formal school but that didn't stop her from learning and growing. She took to YouTube to learn new recipes and started working as a cook. Eventually, she realized she could do more with her time and bought a sewing machine to take up small tailoring jobs from her network.
Like a true entrepreneur, when COVID-19 hit, Usha spotted an opportunity to make masks. A larger manufacturer contacted her and paid her a mere ₹3 per mask for her labour and time (she used her own sewing machine, the raw material was provided by the manufacturer) and each such mask was sold for ₹150. Usha was actually losing money with this deal.
Usha didi's quality of the product was good, but she wasn't able to reach her customers without middlemen. This is why UshaMakes was started- to make reusable masks more affordable for you and ensure Usha makes a fair wage.
