Sauces & Spreads To Baked Goods, This Label Is Another Reason We Love Kodai

    What Makes It Awesome

Besides all the touristy things you can do in Kodaikanal, we give you a brand new reason to love the hill station. George's Gourmet Kitchen. Run by George Penner, an India-born Russian and his wife, Vera De Jong, an artist, this brand offers an exotic range of sauces and spreads made using locally-sourced ingredients out of the duo's lovely house in Kodai. Born in Andhra, George moved to Kodai in 2007 and he's come a long way since!

What's on offer? Four types of mustard – dijon style, extra hot, full-grain, and honey mustard. They also make three types of pasta sauces – marinara, arrabbiata, and a pizza/pasta sauce. Barbecue sauce, organic ketchup, and plum jam are on offer too. They even ferment chillies for a red chilli paste and a red and green chilli sauce. All these products are sold under the label, George's Gourmet Kitchen which you can purchase online via Amazon!

If that is not enough, the couple also makes bitter orange marmalade and various seasonal jams and jellies. They try and make all their products organic or with natural ingredients sourced directly from farmers. Business was never part of the plan, but things started rolling when George built a wood-fired oven at their house in Kodai and started making pizzas for school kids. Then bagels, then pasta and it never stopped. We're so glad that it's now a full-fledged business. Speaking of bagels, George's Gourmet Kitchen also makes baguettes, sourdough bread, biscotti, chocolate chip cookies, and oatmeal cookies. Prices start from about INR 150.

In Chennai, you can find their products at Sunnybee Supermarket and Organic Shandy. You can even get their bagels, baguettes and sourdough bread directly couriered overnight if you're in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore. We're super excited to try these out!

Disclaimer: The online availability is based on stocks while they last and availability of ingredients.

    What Could Be Better

They have not yet opened their little abode for visitors, but we wish that happens soon. Yes, we are greedy that way. It's beautiful, set amidst pear orchid farms and puppies. They often have bison as visitors (he is living the dream).

Whenever you do get a chance to visit Kodai, do meet Penner at his abode.

In case, you can't find their products on Amazon, you can always Whatsapp Penner and place your orders on the phone.

Besides all the kitchen work, the couple also engages in rescuing street puppies. Though it is only a side activity, they have fostered more than 150 or more street puppies in the past few years. They are also working with local animal welfare organizations to provide free or low-cost neutering, vaccinations, and health care for street dogs.
