If you are a history buff and have already explored the alleys of the old forts in Delhi, you are probably looking for something new. The National Museum’s ongoing exhibition, India and the World: A History in Nine Stories is probably what you need to check out.

What's All The Noise About?

This is the last week to see the 200 objects from British Museum, London and 20 museums and private collections from India on display. Overall, there are 104 iconic works of art from the Indian subcontinent in dialogue with 124 exquisite pieces from the British Museum.

The exhibition is spread over nine sections, each representing a pivotal moment in history: Shared Beginnings (1,700,000 years ago to 2000 BC), First Cities (3000–1000 BC), Empire (600 BC — AD 200), State and Faith (AD 100–750), Picturing the Divine (AD 200–1500), Indian Ocean Traders (AD 200–1650), Court Cultures (AD 1500–1800), Quest for Freedom (1800–Present), and Time Unbound.

The artefacts in the showcase range from stone sculptures, terracotta, coins and manuscripts to textiles, jewellery, Mughal miniatures and contemporary paintings, demonstrating the common threads of human history. It highlights the strong connections India has shared with the rest of the world promoting an exchange of ideas and influences that have helped create a global culture.

Beyond What The Eyes Can See

The objects that are part of the showcase have been picked to provide a multi-sensory experience for those who are visually impaired. National Museum has teamed up with Access for ALL, Radio Mirchi and Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) to make 18 of these prized objects tactile. Some of these are on display for the first time in India. Among these are an original imprint of the Indian Constitution, a Mughal painting showing Jehangir holding portrait of Virgin Mary, a metal humped bull of the Harappan times, Roman and Chinese coins (20 cm diameter) and a painting of malefic planet Rahu.

For anyone visiting the museum for the first time, an audio guide is also available on rent for INR 150 in Hindi, and INR 400 in English, French and German.
