In Search Of Kebabs & Kormas? Head To The Mughlai Pop-Up In Noida

What Makes It Awesome?

We all know families like to eat together but the Jalalis love to cook together too. For the next three months, every Saturday evening Osama Jalali, his mother Nazish Jalali and wife Nazia Khan, can be found at Lawn Bistro in Noida, doing what they do best—cooking a Mughlai meal.

Think Mughlai, and you can catch the fragrance of pure ghee, some delicious gravies, melt-in-the-mouth kebabs. Yes, all these are there and then there are some delicious dishes for the vegetarians too. The good part is that the ghee doesn’t get to you. The spices are subtly blended and you will enjoy the food, provided you eat slowly. The speciality lies in the fact that the recipes are ages old and the taste, unlike any other commercial outlet. There is a set menu, but you can make your own choice. Even as you enjoy your meal, live music adds cheer to the ambience.

In the non-vegetarian section, we vouch for the Chitta Chicken Makhni and Fish Shammi kebab. The chicken was soft and creamy. These are best eaten with chutney and onions.

The Mutton Nihari was tasty and the meat really soft. But the unmissable is surely the Mutton Biryani. It was probably the best meat I have had in a while. For those who want a taste of seasonal greens mixed with chicken, there’s Saag Kofte.

Personally, I felt the vegetarians get a better deal in this menu as neither the kebabs nor the kormas are available anywhere. There is the unusual Kathal Shammi Kebab, which is simply melt-in-the-mouth.  Pathani Khandhaiyan is something you would relish. And there’s Arbi Ka Salan. There’s a lot more, but then you need to discover all those dishes yourself.

And you can’t come out before trying the zarda—sweet rice mixed with nuts.

Price: INR 1,500 plus taxes per person

What Could Be Better?

This pop-up is only for dinner on Saturdays. It’s best to reserve your seat for the restaurant gets full very fast. And this set menu is only for three months. Some dishes might find their way into the regular menu too.
