Iconic Ramlila Portrayals You Cannot Miss

The information in this post might be outdated

It’s that time of the year again when you see the city flush with massive, wooden carcasses of half-complete Ravanas on the roadsides and footpaths. As Dussehra approaches, the victory of good over evil (supposedly) will play out throughout the city at the various Ramlilas.

While you can just head to your closest Ramlila to gorge on delicious food and soak in the onstage drama, here are some of the biggest Ramlila events happening around town.

Note: Ramlila starts on the 29th September and ends on the 9th of October. Entry to most of the Ramlilas is free.

Shri Ramlila Committee

The oldest (and biggest, may we add) celebration in town, they start with a parade of the actors from the Ramlila (called Ramlila Savari) through the streets of Old Delhi and end up at the Ramlila Maidan in Ajmeri Gate where the actors act out crucial scenes from the epic accompanied by music bands. This happens on all the days of Navratri leading up to Dusshera. Expect huge crowds and infectious energy.

The Ramlila starts at 5 PM from 29th September - 9th October.

Nav Shri Dharmik Leela Committee

For the tallest, most dramatic effigies in town, the display in the Red Fort Lawns is definitely the one to turn to. Their depiction of the Ramayana is a crowd pleaser and is full of realistic effects that you can thank technology for.

The Ramlila starts at 6:30 PM from 29th September - 9th October.

Shri Ram Dharmik Leela Committee

Shri Ram Dharmik Leela Committee's Dussehra celebrations leave no stone unturned, trust us. The performance of the Ramlila, we hear is well-detailed and gripping to watch, and the effigies are enormous. They have been continuously named as the best Ramlila in North Delhi.

What steals the show though, is the food stalls and amusement rides. Be sure to sample all you can!

The Ramlila starts at 6 PM from 29th September - 9th October.

Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra

The well-known centre of dance, music, and performing arts puts on a magnanimous show called 'Shriram' every year showcasing every form of art - from music, theatre to dance. They even provide English translations to the spoken lines, so you can take friends who may not speak the language.

The Ramlila showcase at Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra starts at 6:30 PM daily from 30th September - 25th October and ticket prices start at INR 300.

Lav Kush Ram Lila Committee

Established in the year 1979, Lav Kush Ram Lila Committee is one of the oldest in the Ramlila game and are also the most hip- with well-known entertainers taking the stage. The Ramlila takes place in the Red Fort Grounds and you may even spot a celebrity or two there. From special effects to elaborate sets, prepare yourself for a truly memorable show.

The Ramlila starts at 6 PM from 29th September - 9th October.
