Product Pick | Bum Diaries: Meet the Pyjama’s Party

If we were to nominate a wardrobe staple across the board, our vote would go to pyjamas. Not that we aren’t into the LBD for women or a well-tailored suit for men, but nothing compares to dressing down in a pair of pjs. Defining them in the spirit of fashion - they’re versatile, can be paired with almost anything from your existing wardrobe, can quite often be unisex and most importantly, are considered a classic. Also, for those with a penchant for androgyny or raiding your father’s closet {guilty as charged}, the pyjama makes the cut. Affirming our belief in the pyjama, meet the self-confessed crazy pyjama people, sisters-in-law Avni and Sanjam Goel, founders of Below the Belt, who specialise in designing and retailing lazy essentials.

Walking around a recent music festival, Nh7, all the dust cleared and revealed the Below the Belt stall. I have to say, they had me at 'pyjama!' Add to that their quirky prints - cotton pjs with superhero motifs, on-trend Aztec prints, his and hers versions, animal prints and the staple checks - their collection stands out; a far cry from other pyjama stores that tend to get lazy with their choices of print and often end up looking like they just put scrap fabric to good use. As a serious pyjama hoarder, I can safely say that this one is for all of us who take our night and lounge wear very seriously. Also, the questionable fifty-rupee Sarojini Nagar pyjama pile was beginning to lose its ‘vintage’ {to be kind} charm.

Cashing in on the lack of bum basics in the city, Below the Belt covers everything from boxers and pyjamas to night shorts for both men and women. Conceptualised in less than fifteen minutes over coffee at Haus Khas Village, Below the Belt involves a team of freelance graphic designers and fabrication artists when putting together is lines. Although you may have a ton of deja-vu moments with some of their sourced fabric, their in-house designed prints are the ones that'll catch your fancy; pop-colors, neons, Christmas themed, sixties inspired and cartoon copies, it's hard to pick a favorite! It’s always satisfying to buy from designers who take pride in their product and invest some TLC in what they have to offer. By TLC here, we mean each pyjama has a name to identify it! I have now adopted Owl you need is Love and Junglee Jawani.

To sum it up, I had to ask them what they think happens above the belt, to which they quipped, “For now we’re happy working down under!”

Notes in our little Black Book |

We’d cozy up in bed in their quirky and super comfy selection of pyjamas, boxers and night shorts. Choose from their myriad prints; you’ll find the regular stripes, checks and polka dots lounging next to the Aztec, superhero, owl and gingerbread man prints. You’ll also find many the bedtime innuendo-themed bottoms!
