Don't Miss Breakfast: Southern Spice Is Cheap & Serves In Under 3 Minutes

Truth be told, CP is full of hidden gems that have stood the test of time and one such places is Southern Spice. It’s literally a covered shed with a long table where office goers stop by for a super quick bite. The most expensive dish on the menu is a paneer dosa that’ll set you back by INR 60 – so we’re talking budget-friendly South Indian with superhuman turnaround time. 

The place is so busy that there’s hardly any scope for conversation but if you manage to catch the staff in a free moment, they’ll oblige you with monosyllabic replies and well-meaning smiles. We reached here way beyond lunch time and even then, it was difficult to get an eating spot on the table. The staff was running around at the speed of lightening and this meant that our sambar vada and masala dosa made it to us in record time.

We were only too glad to learn that this eatery is more than 25-years-old and has regulars who swear by its food. And how do we know this? Well, a few of them spoke in code words that made perfect sense to everyone but us… Things like “special masala” that weren’t mentioned on the menu were an acceptable part of everyday discussions.

Of course the delivery time was epic but let it be noted that it in no way meant any compromise on the quality. The food was piping hot and the dosa was perfectly spiced and not dripping in oil {something that we feared when we learnt that it cost INR 45}. The vada too was fresh and satisfying as well. It comes with a generous topping of the coconut chutney and is dunked in sambar. If you ask us, it’s fit enough for a meal on-the-go. Other options on the menu: Upma, uttapam and the plain and simple sambar rice among others. 

After this hearty, unbelievably quick meal, we walked out happier and richer. #TrueStory
