What Makes It Awesome

Back when this brand was in South Delhi, I had no clue that their native city was Bombay! The food was so local, so authentic and so Delhi-style and Mughlai that it was hard to believe they were from elsewhere! Then there was a lull and the brand was nowhere to be seen till now, I’m so happy to report that Copper Chimney is back and has a swanky new place at Cyberhub in G-Town!

Best part is that the food is just the way I remember it, wholesome, hearty and delicious. With a legacy that dates back to 1972, I should’ve figured the Bombay connection since their first outlet was inaugurated by the legendary actor, late Dilip Kumar. They had India’s first open show kitchen and was heralded by Chef Tari, the first female ustad, where she dished out some of the most memorable tandoori rotis for her guests.

50 years on here they are back in town with a brightly lit and spacious restaurant adorned with copper cowbells and lush foliage. We of course had to have our classic favourites, so we started with their version of a Malai tikka but on the bone, absolutely luscious and the galouti kebab which is a must have, the only difference is that the ultay tave ka parantha is more of a biscuit and it adds such a lovely crunch of texture to the creamy kebab. For the main course also we stayed true to our memories and had their dal maharaja, perhaps one of the finest versions of dal makhni in town and ideally paired with butter chicken and mutton rogan josh. The mutton was excellent, perfectly cooked, just the right cuts of meat and not overly spicy, just lush and flavourful. For us this is a perfect meal at Copper Chimney even though the menu boasts of a wide selection of kebabs, curries and breads. We finished our meal with a mango kulfi since it was the special of the season.

For our next visit we definitely need to try the Ab-e-Hayat, a subtle vegetable and coconut soup, the Kadak Roomali, a paper-thin bread roasted on an inverted tawa and topped with masalas, their famous Paneer Tikka and the house special Grilled Burrah Chops, which we were told are marinated for over 8 hours. This is le school good eating and the kind of place your parents took you to for family occasions, except now times have changed and we’re lucky enough to be able to eat out as often as we like, so add this newbie to your list for when your Mughlai good cravings kick in!
