Fried Turnip Cake, Pork and Prawn Shui Mai

Cha La Lai, Ginger Martini

For its fancy yet relaxed ambience, and well-informed staff who are more than happy to help you

The beginning

Yauatcha is undoubtedly a fancy place, minus the red roses and lace tablecloths which have come to be synonymous with fine dining. The restaurant is spacious and done up in modern hues along the lines of a traditional Chinese tea house. Once you’re seated {make sure you make prior reservations}, you’re attended to at every point, starting with the server noting down any allergies you may have and any general preferences or dislikes.

We started the meal with the oh-so-famous dim sums: The Pork and Prawn Shui Mai- with a covering which was almost transparent and a juicy filling, even though the flavour of the pork didn’t come out fully. The Crispy Duck Rolls and the Turnip Cake {flattened cube-like cutlets served with greens and a chilli sauce} also made us pretty happy.

The middle

For main course, we opted for the Braised Pork Belly which was doused in truffle sauce. It was served with a side of mantao bread which complemented it to a T. The meat was bursting with flavour and wasn’t the least bit chewy as pork tends to be in the country.

This and the Red Snapper in Asam Sauce sent our spice expectations high, which was toned down with the emergence of the “Spicy” Aubergine with Sato Sauce; however if you’re fond of mustard oil, this dish is a must try. Pair the gravies with Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf for best results.

The happy ending

yauatcha2The dessert menu here isn’t too vast but the good news is that whatever little there is, is pretty damn good. We’re completely in awe of the Raspberry Delice- a combination of raspberries and dark chocolate with raspberry ice cream. However, if you’re a chocoholic, the Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse served with honeycomb ice cream may be the best option.

Yauatcha does not do takeaways or even pack your leftovers, so we suggest you refrain from over-ordering.
