Zambar Rolls Out A Special Menu For The Malayali New Year

The information in this post might be outdated

What Is It?

A special Sadhya menu on the occasion of Vishu {the Malayali New Year}.

Sadhya is a special feast in Kerala, specially prepared during Onam or the new year {Apr 14 this year}. A variety of food is prepared in large quantities and served on banana leaves to people who come for the bhog. The Sadhya involves steamed Kerala Matta rice {or red parboiled rice} as the main ingredient served with many side dishes.

A typical meal includes banana chips {upperi} and fritters coated with jaggery {sarkara varrati} for starters, chutneys of various kinds, buttermilk, coconut water and curries. These include the likes of inji {ginger}, parippu {green moong dal} and kootu {black chickpeas}.

For dessert, expect Payasam {kheer} and uniappam {balls made from rice, jaggery, banana, roasted coconut pieces, roasted sesame seeds, ghee and cardamom powder}.

Who Is It For?

Vegetarians. And omnivores, of course.

Why Should I Go For It?

If you're bored of the regular fare served at restaurants and don't mind trying authentic regional cuisine from Kerala, or want to introduce your kid to new food and Indian culture, or if you're homesick, or if you don't have the bandwidth to take your expat friends down south. SO many reasons.

Anything Else?

Anyone can go here and ask for Vishu Sadhya but its only available on Vishu or the Malayali New Year i.e. Apr 14.
