North Kolkata has a slew of classic and iconic eateries loaded with history. Our newest discovery, Aamar Kolkata Sobar Café, takes off from the nostalgia and gives it a contemporary twist.

What Makes It Awesome

A shout-out to all the North Kolkata peeps – they now have a new chillout zone in their neighborhood that gets all the Bengali feels on point! Aamar Kolkata Sobar Café is just a couple of months old and aims at modernising the age-old Kolkata paarar dokaan (neighbourhood shop) selling fast food.

Right from the décor of the café to its menu, everything has a touch of Bangaliana to it. The outer walls of the eatery is covered with famous, Bengali film posters of the Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar and of other films that were shot in this city (like Devdas). Inside is a huge wall painting of Ma Durga. The red chairs are contemporary takes on the typical red plastic chairs strewn around neighbourhood food shacks in Kolkata (used in the paara adda sessions and pujo pandals).

Coming to the munchies, Aamar Kolkata offers a menu that lists all the famous Bengali fast food items, like Moghlai paratha, cutlets and kabiraji, but each with a little twist in terms of ingredients and plating. The owner Arindra Saha wanted to focus on local fast food culture, hence his additions to the menu include comfort food like luchi-mangsho and Chinese items that one can find at Kolkata street side stalls.

In short, this café is a boon to the young North Kolkatans who now don’t have to travel distances to chill out at a café in other parts of the city. We recommend you rush to this one with your gang for the next adda session.
