Birla Mandir, located on Old Ballygunge Road, is synonymous to Kolkata's cultural lineage. Set up in 1996, it has established itself as a popular tourist spot and is definitely worth a dekko for its architectural designs.
From its towering domes to intricate artwork, the entire monument reflects Rajasthani temple architecture. This white marble temple, built in the style of Bhubaneswar’s Lingaraj Temple, is devoted to Radha-Krishna and took 26 years to complete. The mandir also houses idols of Shiv, Durga and Shakti. You'll find mantras and slokas (verses) engraved on the walls along with visually appealing pictorial depictions of Bhagavad Gita on its stone carvings.
While you can adore its scenic beauty during the daytime, we recommend dropping by the temple at dusk as the place is lit with electric diyas and gleaming chandeliers. Accompanied by continuous chanting of hymns and soft music, this is a must-go place in case you are looking for some peace and spirituality.
The best time to visit would be during Ratha Yatra and Janmashtami.
