Broke But Fabulous? Hit Up These Southern Avenue Eateries For A Date Under INR 500

Are you a foodie on a tight budget? It’s possible to have great food without having to shell out a fortune, if you just know where to look. These five eateries in and around Southern Avenue are right up your alley.

Tight budget or not, everyone should try out this cozy little café bang opposite Rabindra Sarobar stadium. At Macazzo, you can have a filling and tasty meal along with beverages at just INR 500 for two. Their specialty is their bacon and cheese loaded French fries for INR 280 {it gives us a decadent pleasure just writing about it}, and their kiwi mojito for INR 100, so whatever you do, don’t miss out on these two.

Also try out their monster burgers for INR 400 onwards {do build up a generous appetite before you decide to try it} and their pork ribs for INR 370 onwards. The food tastes heavenly, they don’t leave your hunger unsatiated, and they don’t burn a hole in your pocket either. Pocket-friendly food for the win!

The Chaiwala

Yes you read that right, this famous Tollygunge joint has set up shop at Southern Avenue as well! We don’t know if they intend on making additions to the menu in their Southern Avenue branch, but our little birdies say they’ll retain their classics. Which is a lifesaver, because where else will we get such lip-smacking pasta {INR 165 onwards}, robust burgers {INR 140 onwards} and delish sandwiches {INR 90 onwards} for just INR 400 for two? Also, as their name suggests, if you have a fine taste for teas, you will love their range of exotic teas starting from INR 60.

For steaming fresh kachoris, jalebis and tea — as a quick pick me up for breakfast, or as a quick snack on the way home, Maharani is your go-to place. It’s not a café per se, a streetside stall to be precise, but don’t mind all that because their food is out of this world. The entire experience of hogging crispy kachori after kachori standing on the pavements of Sarat Bose Road with the scent of fresh sabzi wafting in the air is something you will get nowhere else for just INR 15- 20. Don’t miss out on their tea, it’s one of the best streetside chai we have had in this entire city.

Craving delicacies from the south? Filter coffee, masala vada, uttapam, upma, paper masala dosa, butter masala dosa, vada sambar — you name it, they’ll whip it up for under INR 200 for two. Yes it’s that cheap, and the food is just as good. Don’t miss out the filter coffee — it’s an underrated south Indian delicacy that you won’t get too easily in Kolkata.

For a quick snack, or summer coolers, Fillers is a place you can try. The space here is miniscule and there’s just one chair, so you just take the food in your hand and eat outside. Fillers is good for quick bites like boiled masala corn, pav bhaji, fries, slushies, coffee and the likes for maximum INR 80 each. The menu has a lot of other options if you are willing to try it.
