Shortcut
What Is It?
Kolkata designer Abhishek Dutta has opened a manufacturing unit inside the Presidency Correctional Home in Alipore where he is currently providing work to 45 jail inmates. You can buy the clothes at all Biswa Bangla shops (in Dakhinapan, Park Street, New Town} and at special Tantuja outlets, apart from Abhishek’s own store at 21, Ballygunge Station Road in Dhakuria.
The first collection manufactured by the jail unit was showcased at a special show organised by Abhishek in collaboration with the state Correctional Services department last month.
Tell Me More
Launched this April, the unit has already grown in size. Abhishek and his team has trained the inmates extensively over these three-and-a-half months. The workers at the unit get paid for their work and some of them also get parole to meet their families. The 12,000sq ft unit with state-of-art machines houses separate sections for pattern-cutting, stitching and embroidery on clothes. A unit for bags and shoes has been started very recently that’s churning out samples now.
Anything Else?
The unit aims at skill development by training the inmates in various aspects of garment manufacturing and the designer has also promised them employment in his company after they get released from jail.
