We came across Frida Kaali’s stunning work at this multi-designer boutique called Mono. They had kept a few sarees on display and we just couldn’t take our eyes off the intricate and unique work done on them and the fact that they were all in black and white only.
The brand wishes to delve into the depths of an artist’s mind and bring out 'innate emotions and creative madness', which is 'abstract and untouchable' into a form that can be consumed by everyone in 'textures and layers'. Devika and Suchi wish to bring art and imagination into minimal fashion and modern lifestyle through a series of sarees and stoles with intricate pen and ink work done on them.
Suchi uses pen and ink to create patterns and motifs with intricate details and formations after which they are turned into prints (digital, block prints, screen, hand-painted, etc.) and transferred on to the sarees and stoles. She is inspired by nature, human emotions, and the contrasting energies within all of us. She believes in the magic of patterns and shapes that helps her create playful and surreal designs.
We absolutely love the seahorse sarees that are inspired by the creatures of the sea and are a “play of movement and stillness, like a game of hide and seek”. The patterns are intricately designed to form shapes of mysterious and intriguing creatures that reside deep down in the vast sea. Then, there’s one with a jellyfish, which is known to go with the flow instead of determining its own course. Also, find sarees with clean patterns and bold stripes representative of both the gentle and fierce sides of a woman.
Stoles start at INR 4,000 and go up to INR 7,000 while the price range for sarees is between INR 12,000 to INR 18,000.
