A day out a cemetery may not seem like everyone’s cup of tea, but you might want to make an exception for the Commonwealth War Graves At Bhowanipore.

What Is It?

The Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Bhowanipore is where you can see war graves from the two world wars in all their crumbling glory. It has over 617 war graves from WW II, and 95 from WW I. The inscriptions will make you realize that many died young. The history of the site and the epitaphs make for a solemn, but interesting, walk.

Where Is it?

The cemetery is at no. 15 Debendra Lal Khan Road, Calcutta 700027, near Alipore Police Station.

Why Should I Go?

This War Cemetery {in use since 1864} is a must-visit if you love history. There are several civilian graves here as well – the war plot is at the rear of the civilian cemetery. It was a civil cemetery back then, but after the number of casualties during World War I, a large section of the cemetery was used for burial of Commonwealth casualties.

Anything Else?

It is open every day from 9am to 4pm. Wheelchair access is possible via the main entrance.
