If you’re a big fan of the waters, you’re in for a treat in the not-so-distant future – the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation {BMC} has made a decision to construct eight new swimming pools in the city.

Yup, you heard that right! The BMC has already allocated an annual budget provision of 35 crores for the fiscal year 2018-19 for all these projects spread across the city. According to this report, garden department officials say that the tenders for three different pools have already been floated while the rest of them will be floated in a month’s time. They also mentioned that the new pools will add more capacity to the existing pools in the city.
Where Can We Find Them?
Out of the eight proposed pools, three pools {whose tenders have already been floated} are at Worli Hill Reservoir, Chacha Nehru Garden, Malad and Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj ground in Vikhroli, while the other five pools will be at these locations – Indira Gandhi Manoranjan Maidan in Andheri West, Kondivita in Andheri East, Gyandhara Maidan in Dahisar and Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Govandi.
How Soon Can We Swim?
According to the report, a civic official mentioned that the pools should be ready in 30-months’ time, excluding the monsoons. The pool size is 25 by 15 meters {short course} and they say that about 200 people can use the pool at the same time {sounds pretty congested, but hey, as long as we get to swim!}. The BMC currently has around seven swimming pools in its kitty, including the one at Dadar which is an international standard one. The great news is that it is also redeveloping Kandivali’s Sardar Vallabhai Patel pool and converting it into an Olympic-sized pool; also, Chembur’s pool that was under redevelopment is almost ready for use.

The BMC is spending around eight to nine crores on each pool’s construction. Apart from the usual amenities, they’re also planning on adding lifeguards, security, trainers, an ambulance and doctors on call at these pools.
Honestly, this news brings us a lot of joy knowing that a lot of us don’t have to travel too far to satiate our water cravings. 2018, so far, sounds like a great year!
