Mulled Wine

Aditi Keni, a personal chef is the go-to person for traditional Glühwein aka mulled wine. A German drink that one gets at every Christmas market in Europe, Keni sells bottles of mulled wine every Christmas with an Austrain recipe. She makes her own ferment of the pulpy merlot variety of grape grown in Nashik, a process that begins in May. Come December they simmer it down with locally available stone fruits, assorted citrus, and bottle it up for sale. They deliver it across Mumbai, and there is no minimum order.

With hints of mulling spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and sugar and raisins in the mixture to add a little bit of zest, mulled wine is best when its hot and warm. So pour it into your mug and break into Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You‘.

#LBBTip: This year almost 500 batches were made, however Aditi tells us only 75 bottles are left which means SPARTA {grab em now}.

Price: INR 750 per 350 ml bottle; INR 1,500 per 750 ml bottle

For the stuffing, one can choose from beef, pork or chicken and add in raisins, dry fruits, shredded or spares. This comes with a side of complimentary roast sauce, mashed potatoes and boiled veggies.

Marissa Fernandez is Mumbai-born and brought up home-baker who’s been baking professionally for almost three years now at her Rissa Bakes. This Christmas she has decided to go all out with a Christmas special menu that offers rum balls, Xmas themed cupcakes and Christmas loafs.

All of these confectioneries are made to order from fresh ingredients. That’s why Marissa says she only accepts orders three days in prior. Her Christmas loafs are a popular selling that come in flavours of choco almond, choco rum, choco plum {INR 120 each}. She tells us the raisins were soaked in rum for at least a month. Then the rum is used in the batter along with the stuffing of raisins to create the traditional plum loaf. The exciting Xmas themed cookies are our favourite though, as they come in the shapes of Xmas tree, reindeer and even our beloved Santa.

Mani Vinaik, who runs Through The Food Door is super enthusiastic about her classic rum cake that she is offering this Christmas. A baker of almost two years, Mani tells us she soaks her raisins in rum and wine for about two months to get the perfect taste out of them. Not just raisins, she also uses cranberry, apricots, cherries and blueberries in her plum cakes, a recipe she created herself.

However, if you are not up for the cake, you can also opt for her Christmas loaf. These are smaller and weight about 350-450 grams. So far she has already been receiving an overwhelming number of orders, but she tells us since she has an abundance of raisins, she will be taking the orders till 15 January {something to celebrate your New Year’s with as well}. It’s advised to place an order at least two-three days in advance and the cakes can be delivered or picked up.

Price: INR 1400 for a cake of one kg, loaf of 350 grams for INR 300 and upwards.
