Sound Of Music - Nita Mukesh AAmbani Cultural Cetre

What Makes It Awesome

Being in the maximum city for more than 6 years now, it’s a shame I have never seen a musical before when I’ve always been a fan of them.

But the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre presented the perfect way for me to fulfil this dream! Alongside the first-of-its-kind costume art show ‘India in Fashion’, the NMACC has amped up its artistic repertoire with yet another blockbuster show, ‘The Sound of Music’ —an internationally renowned Broadway musical, which has toured over 100 countries and bagged many awards along the way. Its opening run at the Cultural Centre marks the first time ever that this show and Broadway musicals come to India!

We attended the opening night of the musical at NMACC, which is now India’s newest landmark for all things art and culture. Walking past the Fountain of Joy, which has its own captivating show every day, is the entrance to The Grand Theatre—which can seat up to 2,000 guests. The part that stole the show before the actual show even began were the exclusive Diamond Boxes (with complimentary butler service! Talk about grand) and the Swarovski crystal-studded ceiling that changes colour along with the mood.

If you have not watched the movie (like me), the show is set in Austria in the 1930s, and is about a family of 8—the dad, Mr. Von Trapp, and his seven kids and the story of what happens when they are introduced to the world of music for the first time by their governess, Maria Rainer.

The three-hour-long show (with a 20-minute interval) had us hooked from the minute the curtains rolled up. Flawless stage set transitions? Check. Goosebumps-evoking live singing? Check. Perfectly calculated dance steps that make it look like a movie unless reminded otherwise? Take my money now!  Personally, I loved when the song ‘My Favorite Things’ came up as it has always been on top of my playlist whenever I need a mood booster. If you're a Broadway fan, this is your chance to catch the legendary musical live!

Photography was prohibited during the show, but we got some pictures at the end when the performers were taking in all the applause and admiration of the audience.
