I’m not much of a ‘mithai’ person, maybe it’s years of consuming the same stuff or maybe that there’s never any innovation so barring a few, I rarely crave Indian sweets. That was until I chanced upon, wait for it, Whiskey Ladoo, Champagne Ladoo, Mojito Ladoo and Red Wine Ladoo and that was just the laddoo selection. Fusion food is not my thing but these were deceptively fascinating because they looked like laddoos, had the same satisfaction when eaten but there were these underlying flavours which made them into something entirely new. The Red Wine laddoo, in particular, worked out the best so I decided to go the ‘whole hog’ and check out the entire range of Nihira, a contemporary brand that is totally Indian in essence but blends spirits with sweets rather effortlessly.
 
Started in 2017 when the founders of brand wanted to experiment with how a ‘burfi’ can be made into something new and unique and that led to the creation of cheesecake, bubblegum (it’s actually pretty good!), Oreo and Blueberry burfi. Apart from these, it’s their ‘Besan Burfi’ that really brings back the days of winter weddings and overindulgence. We got ourselves a box of assorted sweets and now we can’t think of having the traditional stuff anymore, the box makes for a perfect party favour or invite accompaniment whether it’s a wedding, baby shower, baby announcement or just an evening at home where you want to serve something that’s both unusual and laden with nostalgia. The good thing is that they’ve been fair to the original flavours of classic favourites and balanced the added infusions in a way where the overall taste is very pleasant and to some extent even addictive, you can’t have just one!
 
To add to the mix, they also offer savouries like Peri-Peri Namkeen Paare, BBQ Namkeen Paare and Jalapeno mathi crackers which don't need ‘achaar’ to be perfect. I guess it’s time to up the mithai and namkeen game the next time you need to do a round of gifting and if there’s a wedding in the family, a box of Nihira promises to be unforgettable!

It's Magic When Sweets And Spirits Meet At This Place

If a wedding is coming up and you don't want to give people those tackily-wrapped bhaaji boxes, Nihira is a wonderful alternative. 

They've given contemporary makeovers to all the classic, traditional sweets—be it ladoos or panjiri (ahem, alcoholic fusions anyone?)

We've tried the Gourmet Prasad, Blueberry Barfi, Mojito Laddoo Cheesecake Barfi, Champagne Ladoo, Blueberry Panjiri, Roasted Chana Barfi, Spicy Cheese Namkeen Paare and Cinnamon Brown Sugar Meethe Paare (that's a lot, we know), and while all were good, the last three had our heart.
