The information in this post might be outdated

With Diwali upon us, and the celebrations and festivities already kicking off, you need to bring out the good vibes and channel them into your home for the festive season, and the easiest way? LIGHT UP YOUR HOME! And here’s how you can do it:

Home Cleanup

As the theme goes, it’s time to clean up your space. A year’s worth of clutter and what not has appeared and you just don’t know how. Worry not, we have a whole list of organisers for every space and purpose here. If it’s just your table (that has become the study, eating, and relaxation table), we got you covered there too with this list. And if you want organisers that aren’t eyesores try a basket or few. Compact home? Try this one that can also be decorated with lights, plants, or anything that you like. If you have kids, Cuddly Coo has a whole range of organisers perfect for their stuff. Well, some of it at least.

Bring In The Light

Since the obvious theme is the victory of light over darkness, it’s only obvious that you fill your house with everything that emits or reflects light. The most obvious choice are diyas, and we have a whole list of awesome ones here. Should you want something festive, but also goes well beyond the season, pick up this remote-controlled tree lamp. For something Indian and soft, there’s this lamp for late hours. Fairy lights are always a festive fav (and here’s a Diya themed one too! ), and if you love light and colour, this vase light is just as great during the day as it is at night. Go the tea-light way (instead of diya) with strategically placed tealight holders like these.

Festive Smells And Sounds

What smells and sounds do you associate with Dussera? Flowers, incense, bhajans and bells perhaps? For the music, feel free to use these eco-friendly sound amplifiers to add the bhajans (or any music, for which you can use these in case it’s a party) to the ambient noise during your Navratri gathering.  As for bells, we think these windchimes do the trick!  Set up pure incense in these festive-looking holders, or your regular incense sticks in ones like this that work for your prayer room too. Go the smokeless way with Templebloom scented candles or scented wax bars for daytime festivities  And there’s always potpourri that works through the year.

If you’ve got bells, incense, and diyas and/or candles covered, then you know that big part of Dusshera celebrations are Pujas. Whether it’s more of a community thing or something you do personally, it’s definitely important. Either over your puja room or door, hang up a thoran and watch the vibe change immediately. Whatever the deity, add some flourish around them by placing them on a festive looking runner (this can go back to regular usage later of course). Draw attention to the area with extra lighting of course! Add an extra diffuser with calming essential oils to set the mood  If you’re welcoming guests, a platter with puja essentials like haldi, kumum, flowers and the like is in order (here’s a fancier one for when you really want to dial it up). Place two Diyas that others can also use for any rituals. But if you want something that has everything you need for a puja or ritual this one by Amaya decors has it all!

Bring In The Guests

Ah, of course, the best part of any festival is the guests! Okay, first of, if you’re Tamilian or Kannadiga and need to add to your Golu collection, here are some nesting dolls by URU. Have Sharma ji meet their doll counterparts with this set and set it next to this truck (Make an Ayudh puja joke while you’re at it). Handmade, they will definitely help with conversation. While they marvel at all the wonderful decorations, bring out the snacks in these on theme bowls, or leave it out in these. If you’re looking for snacks to serve, try any from this list (guest approved!), and if you're looking for other ways to deck up your home for the festive season, we’ve got another guide for you here!
