How often does a trip to the legendary A1 samosa of Sion involve a 5-month-old Labrador and a visit down memory lane? Read on to find out.

Samosa Over Mimosa

Typing in ‘A1 samosa’ into our Maps, we sat in our cab with hunger and excitement. As first-timers of the hallowed snack, we didn’t quite to know what to expect, except that it was going to be fantastic.

A few minutes {although it seemed like hours} later, on telling our cabbie about our noble intention to scarf down piping hot samose, we heard equal enthusiasm come on from the front end of the car.

Why the excitement, you ask? A1 has been selling mouth-watering samose even since before the turn of the century. The famous joint with a factory in Sion supplies its samose to so many local sweet shops, single screen movie theatres and even multiplexes such as PVR, INOX and other giants.

The classic one is a simple samosa enclosing a potato filling in it, but that’s only the start of what they offer. Chinese samosa, samosa with noodles, paneer samosa, cheese corn samosa and more.
Each of these are priced super reasonably at ten bucks a pop, and are packed in a brown paper bag to go with. There’s even a tea stall to the left of A1 Samosa, where delicious tea {not too sweet, not too milky} is sold for INR 7 as a perfect accompaniment to this evening snack.

It's A Dog Eat Dog World

If you find the samosa a bit plain for your liking, you only need to hop on over to the other side of the road to the famous 41-year-old Sindhi eatery, Gurukripa who takes the A1 samosa and serves it with delicious tangy chhole. Best effect is achieved with a glass of lassi on the side.

It’s a push definitely comes to shove situation at A1 factory right across the road, and while we lingered in between the two joints, A1 and Gurukripa, a sweet lil lab called Zoey too was drooling at the sight of the food. We went to pet her, started talking to her pet parent, who turned out to be the owner of the Sindhi establishment {and brother of the owner of A1 samosas}. Thrilled, we spoke of a love of street food, samose and dogs while he also told us of how he lives directly above the restaurant and calls for packets of samose every evening.

So, We're Saying...

Are they really A1 in taste? To a homesick Delhi Girl looking for a piece of home in a triangular deep-fried snack, you bet.
