The summers and monsoons call for more natural and sombre colour palettes that soothe, add a cool vibe to the home, and are comprised of rustic fabrics like jute, linens and raw cotton. But, as the festive season beckons, it's time to dress things up just a little. The Diwalis, Navratris and New Year's Eves call for bright colours, moody jewel tones, and a little sparkle. Whether you want to bring stuff you already own out of storage or shop for new and shiny things, we're here to remind you it's time for a switch-up!

Shopping for all new furnishings? Here's a list of stores we love to hit up when we want festive cushion covers, dhurries, carpets and curtains.

AA Living, Nepeansea Road

This SoBo store has been around since 1998, and you're spoilt for choice here when it comes to basics and then some. You can score quality pillow covers, doormats, rugs, luxury bedding, and the works. You can treat yourself to some chic hotel-style bedding, or you can score thick Turkish towels. You can also get home accessories like placemats and baskets, and they've also got a range of home fragrances. This bright, colourful store is a one-stop shop and a must-visit if you're a SoBo resident.

Price: INR 125 onwards for face towels.

Timings: 10 AM to 7:30 PM. The store is closed on Sundays.

Pawar Mattress and Furnishing (Altaf), Pali Hill

Oh, you’ve probably noticed this one near Janata in Bandra. It’s flamboyant, bohemian, colourful and simply FUN! From ottomans with joyous prints to embroidered curtains that add spunk to your living space, this store has been a favourite of ours for quite a while. The founder, Altaf, is creative and has a distinctive style that most young homeowners (or renters) love. The range is on the more affordable end, but don’t head here for basics - this is for the ones with a boho-yet-chic taste.

Price: INR 450 onwards for cushion covers.

Timings:  10 AM to 10 PM. The shop closes at 2 PM on Sundays.

Handloom Emporium, Goregaon West

This one’s been around for over 30 years, and most people in the Goregaon/Malad/Jogeshwari area make a beeline for this store when they want to update their furnishings. The store’s large, and has super helpful staff that ensures you find furnishing options within your budget. This is a classic store where there’s a bhaiya showing you all the options offered on a counter, and always offers you chai so you can park yourself on a chair for a bit, and browse conveniently. Single bedsheets, duvets, pillow covers - they’ve got it all. They stock all major brands, too.

Price: INR 50 onwards for kitchen towels.

Timings: 10 AM to 9:30 PM.

Maspar, Lower Parel

Okay, on to something fancier. There are lots of fancy stores in Lower Parel for furniture, furnishings and decor, and this is one of them. Maspar is all about making sure your home looks classy. Neutral tones, pared-back designs and rich fabrics are the default here, and their embellished options are anything but gaudy. This is for those who want to switch things up, but buy high-quality products that look rich and polished. Their bedding options are dreamy - the kind you truly must touch and feel before you take the leap and purchase them.

Price: INR 399 onwards for satin cushion covers.

Timings: 10 AM to 8 PM.

Kalakaari Haath, Lower Parel

While you're in Lower Parel, do head to Kalaakari Haath as well. Well known for its unique India-inspired prints, whether it's wall decals and wallpapers or pillow covers and beautiful printed upholstery fabrics, it's a large store that is too easy to spend a ton of time in. Even their kids' room section is tastefully done. This is a pricey one, but we think if you're looking to invest in quality furnishings that show off your personality a bit then it's unmissable.

Price: INR 899 onwards for cushion covers.

Timings: 10: 30 AM to 6:30 PM. The store is closed on Sundays.

The Great Eastern Home, Byculla

Byculla’s mill areas are home to massive home decor and furniture stores, like this one. The Great Eastern Home is a great spot to visit for those who have huge homes and have had them designed by interior designers, but best believe that they’ve got beautiful options for renters, too! Their soft furnishings have a telltale Indian character to them, with rich patterns and fabrics being used to create sturdy, high quality furnishings. They’ve also got a variety of carpets, faux fur cushion covers and handloom options that are timeless but statement-making nonetheless.

Price: INR 900 onwards for a set of cushion covers.

Timings: 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM and 10 AM to 7 PM on Sundays.

Daffodils, Chembur

Daffodils, The Furnishing Gallery is a huge store in Chembur that’s another one-stop shop for furnishing options. This one’s got a lovely high-end curation of upholstery fabrics, cushion covers and more, with many pieces with rare prints of Ancient Indian art. Their range of rugs is stunning, but we’d wager that you can score a good deal here if you’re upfront with the staff about your budget. The nicest part? The staff lets you take home fabric swatches so you can test whether they match with your interiors or not.

Price: INR 599 onwards for cushion covers.

Timings: 10:30 AM to 8 PM. The store is closed on Sundays.
