Many of our single-screen cinemas, which used to flourish and form the backbone of the city’s entertainment, are now slowly – and literally – crumbling away. Deepak Cinema in Lower Parel is a wonderful exception to that rule.

What To See

First opened to the public in 1926, the cinema oozes old-world charm. While the owners recently refurbished the cinema to contemporary standards, it retained all of its original architecture.

My favourite example of this is the iconic, powder blue archway at the entrance of Deepak. This leads you into a spacious courtyard – a rarity in bustling Lower Parel – where you find an F&B stall, a Balinese-style walkway and two rather fabulous elephant statues.

Then, of course, the movies. Deepak Cinema has kept up with the times, and shows a unique range of art house movies, foreign films, classics as well as the latest Hollywood and sometimes Bollywood releases in 3D. And fear not – while the cinema boasts old world architecture, the 500-seater auditorium has been refitted to high standards for a PVR-worthy movie-viewing experience.

Need To Know

Tickets cost between INR 150 and INR 300. This week, the cinema is showing Ben Hur, City Of God and UnIndian.

If you can’t make it this week, there are some fabulous art house movies coming up over the next month or two, including Ran {1985}, Before Sunrise {1995} and Bonnie and Clyde {1967}.
