What Makes It Awesome?

As we whiz past Marine Drive, lined with beautifully curved buildings, one can’t help but admire the architectural style that originated from France. Mumbai, after Miami, has the 2nd largest concentration of Art Deco buildings. Regal, Eros, and Metro cinema and Soona Mahal, Queen’s Court, are some of the notable buildings that have caught the eye of wanderers at South Mumbai amongst many others.

Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Round edges to give an aerodynamic feel, racing stripes, ornamental windows and imageries, ziggurat and certain patent elements like frozen fountains and window eyebrows characterise an art deco structure.

Artdecomumbai.com is a one of its kind initiative that documents all the art deco heritage in Mumbai, provides locations where they can be found, and even takes guided tours that are led by an architect. Its plethora of inventory is commendable and they encourage people to contribute by adding ones that aren’t listed. Also, they have a blog in a nascent stage where enthusiasts can post articles.

Thanks to the founder, Atul Kumar, and his team that we are just a click away from exploring the city and its cultural heritage.
