Ever wondered what it’s like to eat with a fisherwoman at her home? Dine With Kolis lets food enthusiasts do just that.
Did You Know You Could Eat A Seafood Meal At A Fisherwoman's Home?
Shortcut
What’s It About?
You might crave a delicious fish curry, or may be a pomfret fry or even a prawn pulao, and to satiate your hunger, you will head straight to the nearest fish market and find out what the catch of the day is. But what if we told you that you can now get into the house of a fisherwoman, know more about her and eat a scrumptious meal cooked by her with the freshest fish available? It’s a dream come true, ain’t it?
Dine With Kolis, a concept started by the happy people of Authenticook, lets you into the seafood-rich lives of the Koli community of Versova and gives you a chance to gorge over some of their toothsome delicacies such as aambyat la ambat, bharleli keli, tisrya masala and a whole lot more. The Koli community have been residents of Mumbai ever since the beginning, and Rajni, the home chef from the Versova Koliwada has been residing in the locality for decades.
While she’s a thorough fisherwoman- one who can tell the fish with its smell – she is also an excellent chef and makes the most delectable Koli staple food, the kind that will break your perception of it otherwise created by restaurants. Unlike popular belief, Koli food is very innovative and full of homemade masalas {they’re not all spicy, seriously}.
How Does It Work?
Diners can sign up for her home meals, wherein they get a chance to do a walk through the Koliwada, after which they’re seated at her cosy home and served some freshly made preparations. While her son-in-law {who is instrumental in starting the Versova Koliwada Seafood Festival} gives you an insight into the lives of fishermen, Rajni {and her daughters who help her}, will cook you delicacies such as karandi bhajia {bhajias made with tiny shrimps}, bombil fry, rawas/ surmai kelwan {Koli-style gravy made using the catch of the day}, bharleli paplet {stuffed pomfret}, bhakri {rice and ragi flatbread which is flattened entirely by hand and roasted}, bhaat {steamed rice}, salad, and khobrya cha khirapat {a sweet dish made of roasted coconut and mawa} for dessert {simply divine}.
