The fashion capital of India, Mumbai's a mecca for boutiques by designers big and small. If not for designer labels, several boutiques house apparel and home decor that's been hand-picked from the most fashion-forward cities of the world.

Trendy apparel, trendier accessories and host of other knick-knacks that could run steep are a common find at the independent stores. We've rounded up a list of a few of the best boutiques in the Mumbai. All you need to do is bookmark this and get shopping!

If you haven't heard of Anokhi, you've been living under a rock! Located on Waterfield Road in Bandra, which is a street full of independent shops and cafes, this boutique is where you go to grab elegant fabrics and styles. Right from their unique range of kurtas to imitation jewellery, whatever you lay your eyes on is worth buying. Anokhi has a home decor section too, offering quilts, mattresses, cushion covers, and the works!

You Only Live Once has a home in Link Square Mall off Linking Road and is ideal to shop at if you're a 20-something. Pocket-friendly dresses, tops and lots of partywear rule the roster here. You'll find the latest cuts and details, lots of crop tops, strappy dresses and several alternatives to an LBD here too. Gowns and more elegant party dresses along with a few accessories can be found here too.

Mesh: Your Fashion Runway

For high-end brands at affordable prices, hop into Mesh in Khar West. From clothes, bags, sunglasses, denims to other accessories, Mesh offers everything. And, also has a few pieces from Zara, H&M and Forever 21 at cheaper prices. They restock their collection on a daily basis as they perpetually have new stock coming in.

Rajni Boutique

Offering handlooms at affordable prices, Rajni Boutique in Fort has contemporary styles cut out of Indian fabrics. The store is a bit old-worldly-looking, offering items perfect for hot and humid Mumbai. The 90-year old store has kurtis, kaftans, sarees, and salwar suits, which start at INR 1,000 and can go up to INR 10,000 depending on the embroidery/embellishments. They also have some home decor items. Stone candle stands are worth shopping for from Rajni Boutique; and home decor here ranges from INR 200 to INR 3,000.

Si Branche

Si Branche in Pali Hill is home to outfits of all kinds. From workwear to partywear, there's something for everyone and for every occasion. Tops, dresses, bags, clutches, shoes, accessories - whatever you may need, you can ideally get a whole outfit here. The entire collection here is hand-picked by the owners from Bangkok, China and London, so you know it's going to be some of the trendiest wear you'll ever find.

Nautica

Partywear and cocktail gowns are what Nautica in Bandra West does best. The collection here is unique and you'll find bridal wear, Indian wear that's ideal for weddings, and embellished gowns too. The best bit? They customize your outfits for you; but during festivities and the wedding season the boutique can be super busy and requires a 15-day notice to prep your outfit. The price range for short dresses here starts at INR 4,000 while ethnic wear can start at INR 12,000. Prices can vary mostly because of customization and the fabrics or details you choose.

Clothes Rack

For budget shopping, Clothes Rack is a great bet. Its Andheri West outlet is very active and one with a better collection, in our opinion. You can find denims at INR 1,000, tops at INR 450 and dresses starting at INR 600. The collection is mostly casual, but you might come across a few pieces that can pass off as semi-formal wear too. The best part about Clothes Rack is their range of sizes; you'll easily find XXL here.

Madison

Frequented by Bollywood celebrities, Madison was founded by Trishna Bajaj and is located at Cumbala Hill. The boutique brings a little bit of New York to Mumbai, as it offers high-street labels for women's clothing and accessories. You could call it a trendsetter of sorts as it updates its collection often. The likes of Bipasha Basu, Soha Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra, among others have been spotted shopping here.

At present, the collection includes tiered dresses, pantsuits and loungewear. The price range usually start at INR 3,000 and while most items can be steep, it's worth checking out for the latest styles.

Shay

Located in Matunga opposite the iconic Arya Bhavan, Shay is a local boutique offering trendy wear and indo-western outfits. It's an ideal boutique to shop at for a wedding or a party because you're bound to get embellished jumpsuits, gowns, and stitched pant-sarees that have been trending for a while now.

The price range at Shay starts at INR 1,500 and you'll surely be able to get an outfit that fits right (because they'll ensure its altered for you!).
