6 Pottery Classes In Mumbai For The Enthusiastic Amateur

When was the last time that you did something for the first time? We can’t remember and if you can’t either, here are some hobby pottery classes that will help you change that. A few hours out of the weekend, and you’d have learnt a new skill, have had something to take back home and had a positive answer to the question we just asked.

Potter's Place, Mahim

This studio in Mahim is run by a self-taught potter — Shalan Dere. She specialises in ceramic home decor pieces. When you enter her studio, you're taken to a magical world of figurines, pots, vases, sculptures, and much more. She churns out her clay in the garden area, and conducts workshops for people on request. You'll learn a variety of techniques, both wheel and hand techniques. Price: INR 15,000 for four sessions in a month (three hours per session)

Rekha Goyal's The Pottery Lab

This is a lovely space in Bandra, quite like the classic potter lab, with a wooden table in the centre where you are cut off from the world. Here, you can just give yourself and your newly-found craft some time. At the Pottery Lab, by Rekha Goyal, sign up for a beginner’s course which takes place over ten sessions ( two hours for each session) or simply enroll for one of the wall-tile designing or coffee mug sculpting workshops. You will learn hand-building, working at the potter’s wheel, decoration and application of glazes from level one which makes this course super beginner-friendly.

Price: INR 17,700 + 18% GST (Total INR 20,886) for the complete course that is inclusive of materials and firing of a maximum of four pieces.

Yellow Spiders Pottery, Kandivali

This pottery studio in Kandivali conducts workshops for personal as well as corporate spaces and are designed to lead teams through a fun, mindful and creative process. Working with clay has been scientifically proven to be a deeply meditative and therapeutic process. And Yellow Spiders Pottery hopes to give the participants a good taste of this artistic therapy through their short and engaging workshops.

Price: The corporate workshop pricing varies, and they provide quotations on call. The personal 1-day course fee is INR 1,440 for a two-hour session. The beginner's course fees are INR 12,000 for ten sessions (two hours per session), which include materials, tools, expertise, and firing charges.

Clay Explore, Prabhadevi

Tucked in the heart of the city in Prabhadevi, ceramic artist Yashashri Shildhankar is a graduate of the J.J. School of Arts and now runs her studio Clay Explore. Apart from selling her own ceramic designs, she also hosts workshops and pottery classes for beginners and has an advanced batch too. You can choose from a one-time class of two hours, take up to ten sessions which is a course for beginners or take up the regular evening classes. 

Price: INR 2,200 for a two-hour one-time class, INR 20,000 for the beginner’s course or ten sessions.

Tiny Clay Inn, Andheri

Located in D.N. Nagar, the Tiny Clay Inn is a small pottery studio offering a range of different session types to sign up for. Known to host pottery Date Nights, this studio dims the light and sets the mood for two to come in and take a class together. It’s a great idea for a date with your best friend or partner. You can also sign up for their wheel-only or wheel and burning sessions, which will make any beginner an expert. 

Price: INR 5,500 (Monday to Friday) or INR 6,500 (Saturday to Sunday) for Wheel-only Beginner’s course (two sessions per week); INR 9,500 (Monday to Friday) or INR 10,500 (Saturday to Sunday) for Wheel and Burning Beginner’s course; INR 750 (Monday to Friday) or INR 1,000 (Saturday to Sunday) per person for a 1-hour session; INR 1,000 (Monday to Friday) or INR 1,350 (Saturday to Sunday) per person for Date Nights.

Studio Karva, Mankhurd

Located in Mankhurd, Studio Karva is run by artist Rashi Jain. She has trained in ceramics and visual art at the Valley School, Bangalore and the Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry. Get basic or advanced training, classes at Studio Karva are open for all ages.
