Come winter, most of us become a little more adventurous, don’t we? The humidity in Mumbai makes it a little difficult to be outdoorsy, and we all love a little respite from it. Thankfully, Maharashtra’s dotted with forts and valleys that make for amazing treks that are beginner-friendly, too! We listed down 5 trekking destinations around the city that you NEED to cover while the weather’s chilly… Especially if you only have a weekend to spare, and not 15 days for a trip to Himachal.

Raigad Fort

This otherwise hot region becomes ultra pleasant during the winter months. Raigad fort was where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation took place. It’s historically significant, and if you’re a culture vulture, make sure you get a good view of the fortress once you’re at the top. And then you can turn around and take in the good old views of the Sahyadris!

Korigad Fort

The Korigad fort is a truly beginner-friendly trek that offers stunning views and many calories burned… While also being quite, well, chill. It predates 1500 AD, and was abandoned in the 1800s. The fort is in good shape, and you can actually walk the entire 2km perimeter. Make sure you check out the canons!

Karnala Fort

Another beginner-friendly trek that probably won’t take you more than an hour and a half. Since it’s quite close by, it’s perfect for a day trip, too. This one has an oft-frequented and well-laid-out route, and many trekking companies offer easy rappelling activities here, too!

Rajmachi Fort

Another trek that’s both easy and close by, Rajmachi is marginally harder than the others on this list, but given how stunning the views are, we think it’s totally worth it. This one’s a great bet for those who have been to a couple of treks, and would like to challenge themselves just a little more.

Kothaligad Fort

This is a trek that has caves along its route, and even has proper steps for most of the way. It’s located near Karjat, so you can definitely take a local back home after! History buffs, y’all will love the age-old carvings on the walls of the fort. If you were to head here during the monsoons, there’s a cute waterfall, as well.
