This fashion and art exhibit brings together a myriad of works created by our students, working in collaboration with exceptional artists/ designers to demonstrate their talents and expressions. The show will be held at the Gateway School of Mumbai campus. It opens to the public on Sunday, April 8th at 11:00 am and will remain open through the day until 7:00 pm. The exhibition will continue on the 10th and the 11th of April from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. The proceeds from the sale of the artworks will go towards Gateway’s Excellence in Teaching Award- a scholarship fund for teachers pursuing a master’s degree in education at the best universities in the world. We are excited to welcome you to the show and our young artists look forward to providing you with insights into their inspirations! At Gateway, the arts programme serves a dual purpose - it is a means of developing oneself as an artist, as well as communicating and engaging with the community through art. The Art show is the culmination of a yearlong exploration and collaboration with different art forms and artists” says Indira Bodani, founder of the Gateway School of Mumbai Here, students get a chance to share with the community their journey and their learning and to also showcase how, with powerful and meaningful collaboration, unique works of art can be born. This year, our community of students, staff and parents were introduced to the traditional art form of weaving on handlooms, an effort steered by textile designer Ms.Kinnari Panikar. This learning led to the inspiration and inception of our theme for this year’s edition of the art show: UBU (You Be Yourself)through an exploration of Fashion. Our collaboration with multiple designers will empower our students to extend their notion of fashion to go beyond clothing to include aspects of their unique selves and personalities. Our aspiring fashion designers then took to the ramp to display their own style, in an in-house UBU Style it Up competition. Students researched and styled models who ranged from parents, siblings, teachers and even our own founding board member, Mr. Dharmil Bodani. At the Art show, the three finalists will be styling professional models, using a range of clothing by fashion designers, to make their UBU fashion style come alive- an effort that will be aided by Alison Woodhamalong with Mehr Rampal, who will be curating the show. The UBU collaborative works on display include outfits created by fashion designers Monisha Jaising, Vikram Phadnis, Seema Khan, Surily DP Goel, and Sandeep Gonsalves and Sarah Sheikh Gonsalves from SS Hommeusing illustrations and fabrics woven by our students through the year; an oil on canvas piece done by our students with visual artist Michelle Poonawala; children's products designed and curated by textile and product designer Supriya Himatsingka using student illustrated designs; and furniture and home accessories, hand painted by our students, designed and curated by designers Renu Chainani Garware, Tania Deol and Haseena Jethmalani & Priya Aswani (PH).
