Akara Art Gallery in Colaba is celebrating their 10-year anniversary with a special exhibition of artwork from acclaimed artist Amrita Sher-Gil. Born in Hungary, to an Indian father and a Hungarian mother, she discovered a talent for art early on in life. Trained at the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she eventually found her inspiration in India, blending the European techniques she had learned in her studies with an Indian aesthetic and inspiration.
Colour has always played a major part in Amrita Sher-Gil's works, and this exhibition highlights her skill as an artist with watercolours, drawings, as well as a self portrait in oil painting. Besides this, the exhibition offers art enthusiasts a chance to get a glimpse of her personal life through her niece, Navina Sundaram’s documentary film "Amrita Sher-Gil, a Family Album".
The exhibition, titled “Perhaps it will fly away if I get up?” draws from a poem written by Sher-Gil herself and its wistful, existential yet powerful and unflinching tones are reflected in her self portrait "Self Portrait in Blue Sari" that you can see here. This exhibition takes you, the visitor on a wonderful journey from her beginnings in Paris to her life as an accomplished painter and artist in India. Virtually each artwork has a multiple layers of meaning that can be delved into, and many have a message, note or annotation that tell us just that little bit more about the artists' mind.
The first in a series of exhibitions to celebrate their 10-year anniversary, this exhibition is a rare treat that art connosiers shouldn't miss.
