What Makes It Awesome?

The next time you’re in SOBO and your stomach craves for non-veg, head to Sarangaa at Prabhadevi and treat your taste buds to quick Malvani preparation.

Tucked in the lane opposite Vijay Sales near Siddhivinayak Temple, Sarangaa houses about 14-15 people at a time (Perfect for a family gathering, right?) and offers a variety of Malvani seafood and other meat options along with some basic vegetarian dishes.

Being Konkani ourselves, we put our ‘critic’ hats on and got back to duty.

It is evident that this place is a tiny one, but cosy & comfortable with its courteous waiter and colourful walls. And not to forget, Sarangaa has won the Times Food Awards along with several other print features. It truly is a diamond in the rough.

We ordered Mutton Kheema Cutlet for starters.

Heart shaped cutlets turn up within 15 minutes. Minced mutton under the cushion of mashed potato, pan-fried to perfection! We’re sold, already!

The green chutney and raita served along took it a notch higher.

For the main course, we unanimously voted for Prawns Tawa Masala with wade.

Prawns Tawa Masala was tangy and less spicy than what an authentic Malvani preparation ought to be. Perhaps, deliberately.

Nevertheless, the prawns were generous and so fresh!

Wade were also non-oily and perfectly fluffy.

Here you might want to note that if you are looking for authentic malwani style dish then opt for the Prawns Curry. It is coconut based and on the spicier end than the Tawa masala.

For rice, we opted for different meat yet again – Chicken Biryani.

The quantity was decent and so were the number of chicken pieces. However, we found the flavour lacking and what is biryani without the oomph factor.

For the desserts, we had a tie – I voted for Ukdeecha Moda icecream (I kid you not, they do serve it) and Kharwas -

Ukdeecha Moda icecream –

This was the highlight of our day! Plenty of saaran (sweet stuffing of a modak) blended with ice cream. Relished it till the last bite!

Overall, we found the place though small, comforting and welcoming. The waiters were approachable, service was fast and the food – fresh & hot. What else matters at the end of the day?

What Could Be Better?

The Prawns Tava Masala could have been a little spicy & the biryani could have some more flavour.

How Much Did It Cost?
