It's that time of the year when the air fills with gulaal and cups of thandai are clinked in street corners. Where people head out white but return in a mix of colours that cannot be singled out. It's time to take out your "can be a pocha" clothes and experience the celebration of Holi.

What Is Holi?

Holi, like I was taught growing up, is the festival of colours. But beyond throwing and drenching each other in colours, the festival has roots in India's mythology. Several anecdotes arise for the festival but two popular ones are the love story between Radha and Krishna and the victory of Lord Vishnu over demon Hiranyakashipu, celebrated with a shower of flowers and colours.

When Is It Celebrated?

Holi is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna, meaning in early March. This year, Holi falls on a Friday, the 14 of March 2025 (yay for a long weekend!). A day prior to Holi is Holika Dahan, where a bonfire is lit, signifying burning all our bad deeds and karma.
