What would we not do for a great idli breakfast? One of our most favourite South Indian delicacies, idli has a way of winning hearts through its sheer simplicity. So, here are the places in Mumbai where you can have the best idli ever!

Banana Leaf, Andheri West

Banana Leaf has a dreamy thali for idli lovers that comes with various kinds of idlis that will sufficiently douse the craving for a good South Indian breakfast. Priced at INR 175, it includes palak idli, dakshin idli masala, mini idli, Vagharela Poriyal idli masala, special kanchipuram idli and rice idli.

Read more about it here.

Price: The idli experience here starts at a humble INR 80 for the saada rice idli

Madras Diaries, Bandra West

This amazing restaurant serves dosas, idlis, poppadum, sambar, rasam, filter kaapi and more. Apart from original dishes from Tamil Nadu, they also have dishes like Jalapeño idlis which is a must try if you are a huge idli fan, and we love a culinary crossover!

Read more about it here.

Price: The steamed idli will cost you INR 110. The Jalapeno Idli will cost you INR 160.

Balaji Idli House, Kandivali West

At Balaji Idli House, you can look forward to varieties of idlis and dosas, many of which are out-of-the-box recipes. Try their Mahabalipuram idli which is very unique in terms of the flavour and is served with a mint chutney on it. The Madras fry idli is also tasty, and is served with a spicy coconut gravy. The Sri Lankan stew idli has its own unique serving style, and is certainly a must-try.

Read more about it here.

Price: The pocket-friendly range starts at INR 60.

Dakshinayan, Juhu

Dakshinayan in Juhu is heaven for anyone who loves South Indian food – and it won’t burn your pocket with its prices. Once you’ve found a spot to sit, order the Ambassador Idli – soaked in sambar and seasoned with onion and garlic masala.

Read more about it here.

Price: Starting at INR 110, the most expensive (and impressive) dish is the Ambassador Idli at INR 205

Ayyappan Idli Stall, Matunga East

Now this one's specifically idli-centric, so you can bet that the idlis here are the bomb! Get the Molgapodi Idli when you're here, for sure. Coated in butter and molgapodi, it's moreish, and we think you'll for be calling for multiple plates of this stuff. Note that there's little to no seating here, so be prepared to eat standing, or in your car!

Price: INR 40 onwards

#Pro-Tip

When it comes to idli, it doesn’t get better than the cornucopia that is Matunga East, where the flavours of south India reside in Mumbai. Be it Arya Bhavan’s coin idlis, Café Mysore’s delectable idlis, Café Madras’ melt in mouth idlis or Rama Nayak’s Udipi Shri Krishna Boarding’s classic idli, you will be in for a treat.

Read more about it here.

Price(s): They're all going to be pleasantly easy on your pocket - no more than INR 180 per head!
