Often confused with marijuana, hemp is one of the most popular industries in the West. In India, thanks to 7 entrepreneurs, Bombay Hemp Company (BOHECO) is India’s first industrial hemp startup, who is reimagining the future of Indian agriculture and sustainable living with hemp as their lens. Their designs fuse the potential of hemp with the existing industries of agriculture, fashion and technology, to bring together the community. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?
All Hail Mary Jane: This Brand Is Selling Natural Clothing Made Out Of Hemp
What Is It?
What’s Special About It?
The Bombay Hemp Company is finding ways to convert the hemp into items of food, clothing and shelter. Driven by the potential that sustainable fashion is the only way forward for a greener future, they occupy a unique space in India’s handloom industry where farmers collect hemp fibre and the women convert them into hand-spun fabrics.
B Label is their sustainable clothing line that has a range of day and evening wear for both men and women, from organically grown and naturally dyed hemp fabric. B Label also branches into B Label Handlooms, where they support women weavers from Uttarakhand who weave handmade stoles created using 100% hemp, organic cotton and lamb wool.
What makes hemp special is that it is stronger than any other natural fabric and is hypo-allogenic, moisture-absorbent, fire retardant and a good insulator, while being one of the few fabrics that breathe.
Their products start at INR 800 and go upwards. To check out their collection, click here.
So, We’re Saying…
It’s high time we rethink our fashion choices and opt for sustainable clothing. The good lads at BOHECO have highlighted this importance and are doing what they can to spread awareness. We’ll be glad to contribute in some little way.
