What Is It?

The Jio MAMI Film Festival is all set take place across Mumbai from October 12 until October 18. There’s going to be indie films, documentaries, festival favourites, regional as well as Hindi films, and we could not be more excited to have a crazy cinematic experience yet again.

There are almost 223 films from 49 countries that will be screened over seven days. We have picked our favourites. If you have your own recommendations, do let us know!

Mukkabaaz By Anurag Kashyap

The opening film of the festival gets a starry start. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this sports drama stars Vineeth Kumar and Jimmy Shergill. We’ve got our eyes on this one!

Call Me By Your Name by Luca Guadagnino

A festival favourite, this beautiful coming-off age film is a story of two men who embark on a journey of self-discovery, romance, and everything in between in North Italy.

Village Rockstars by Rima Das

A huge success at the Toronto International Film Festival, this film follows the story of a young girl in a tiny village in the Northeast India who wants to become a Rockstar. A sweet, simple and an honest film directed, written, produced, edited and even art directed by Rima herself is a deserving one on the list.

Last Flying Flag by Richard Linklater

Sigh. We had been waiting for this one ever since Linklater dropped his subtle and unassuming film, ‘Boyhood’ shot over a span of almost seven years.

Last Flying Flag is a comedy-drama film that chronicles the story of a man who reunites with his friends after 30 years since they fought the war in Vietnam for the funeral of his son {a marine killed in the Iraq war}. It stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne – a definite one on our watching list.

City Of Ghosts By Matthew Heineman

This gritty and realistic film on the harsh realities of the Syrian crisis is cinematic gold. It simply follows the citizen journalists who are out on the ground reporting and getting the news out into the world. Much like the celebrated and heart-breaking documentary, The White Helmets, this one truly encapsulates the decimation of the once-proud Syrian nation.

Spoor {Pokot} By Agnieszka Holland

With its Asia premiere, Spoor is a crime drama which has been adapted from Olga Tokaczuk’s novel based on a small Polish village. It centres around the murder mystery of the number of killings that have taken over the village. This one comes packed with unique cinematic elements and we’re quite looking forward to it.

Patti Cake$ By Geremy Jasper

A special small film to come out of the Sundance Film Festival about a girl in the US who dreams of breaking out in the music scene and become a rapper. Her underprivileged background forms the crux of the story and has received plenty of appreciation across the festivals.

The Hungry By Bornila Chatterjee

And we’re back with Naseeruddin Shah, Neeraj Kabi and Tisca Chopra in an adaption of Shakespeare’s lesser known work, ‘Titus Andronicus’. It’s about two extremely wealthy families who get caught amidst deceit and murder and will be making its India debut at MAMI 2017.

Mother By Darren Aronofsky’s

The supposed Hollywood blockbuster is all set to premier at MAMI starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. This psychological horror/thriller is an interesting throw in this bag of diverse mix.

The Square By Ruben Ostlund

We’re just going to type out – winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, ladies and gentlemen. This Swedish film revolves around a curator of a renowned Swedish museum and the newly hired PR team to publicise the museum. This ensues hilarious mishaps and more. And of course, the film stars the extremely talented Elizabeth Moss.
