“Women are in the world and we will not be bullied” Meryl Streep.
The above quote made a huge impact on me. It made me sit back and ponder over the huge strides women have taken over the years. From being relegated to the kitchen to having no voice, today she claims her seat at the table. Though several steps have been taken to advance women empowerment I still feel we have a long way to go. We have the power to change the world only if we have self-belief.
Through this article, I am sharing powerful techniques to help you create your identity, build a strong sense of worth, all by making simple shifts.
Embrace your authenticity: One of the mistakes we commit is to mold ourselves to please others. Whether it is our dressing or our conduct we adapt to fit in.
Sharing my example: Back in my corporate days, during an evaluation for a senior role, I was once told that my hair color was too bold and it was proving to be a hindrance in my appraisal. I was aghast but I fought hard for the position without changing the color of my hair.
Remember no matter where you go, don’t lose who you are. Be clear on your purpose and get ready to take on the world like you mean it.
Make discomfort your friend: You may be one of the few women in your profession who holds a high position. This can be difficult for many to accept. But being uncomfortable is an advantage. It will push you to do better and prove yourself. In addition, this can win you accolades and can be a rewarding work experience.
Speak up: You may be labelled “pushy” but remember if you don’t speak for yourself you will be dismissed as “weak”. I am not telling you to be a rebel or disrespectful but when the time comes you have to speak up for yourself. Find your voice and assert yourself. That is your only choice.
Always have an action plan: In an ideal world, hard work would be acknowledged and rewarded. Many professional women believe that to still be the case, but sadly it is not so.
Ask anyone in the commander’s seat how they got there the answer would be that they had a Plan-B that leaves scope for adjustments when things didn’t go according to your initial plan.
Draw up a roadmap to achieve your life’s goals. This will help you to keep your eye on the prize (long-tern goals) while still doing a good job in your current role (short-term goals).
Last but not least, grow the sisterhood!!! When you succeed, help other women achieve. Be a pillar of support, be there for each other.
Finally, let’s build a better world for ourselves and for the coming generations of girls. Let them not ask “Why was this not corrected before”?
