Gift That Grows: This Rakshabandhan, Get Eco-Friendly Plantable Rakhis For Your Brother

We buy new, colorful, unique rakhis for our brothers/or sisters every year. But have you thought about where the rakhis go once the festival is done and dusted? While some of you may have siblings who save the rakhis carefully inside a drawer, most rakhis are either misplaced or thrown. But worry not 'cause we're pretty close to making you feel less guilty. Keep this list of eco-friendly, plantable rakhis handy for if you'd want to contribute to the environment to make the festival meaningful.

Pure Eco India

Made using indigenous cotton and an assortment of seeds, these rakhis are put together by a group of talented women from a remote village in Madhya Pradesh. The rakhis are naturally dyed by artisans and then converted into handcrafted bands that are embedded with organic seeds. They're further packed in organic seed paper. So even when you discard it, you enable a plant's growth.

This site's variety is massive, and the green-round-shaped eco-friendly rakhi is our favorite. It's got a cute tree design that's so minimal yet so classy. But Abhika has clay rakhis too, with names and initials written on them, and in case you're looking for customization in names or wacky quotes on the rakhis, feel free to get in touch with them.

Gargi, the founder of this awesomesauce brand that initially used to just sell plantable rakhis, has given it a twist this year. This Aurangabad-based woman is creating gender-neutral plantable rakhis that all genders can buy. She's also run an online campaign called #MeriBehenMeriTakat. These rakhis are made with clay and seeds of Karanja and the Golden Flower Tree, and they're dyed using natural colors from turmeric and rice paste.
