Shortcut

Imagine taking a trip to Elephanta Island off the Mumbai harbour, and staying at a place that is in such close proximity to the UNESCO site. Well, it may soon be a reality, since this is what the Maharashtra government is planning.

What's Happening?

The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is working on a tie-up between hospitality provider Airbnb and locals for offering home-stay to tourists visiting the Elephanta Caves island located in the Mumbai harbour.

The suggestion comes at a time when the island has just recently hosted its famous Elephanta Festival on January 27 and 28 at the caves.

There's More

With over 1,000-1,500 homes on the island, the infrastructure is available, but now the island will also get 24-hours electricity that will boost its position as an overnight tourist destination {currently, people only do day trips to the island}.

Mumbai Port Trust, it is said, is also planning to construct India’s first and largest ropeway to link Mumbai with the island within the coming three years. The 8-km long ropeway is said to commence from the eastern coastline of Mumbai, Sewri and finish at Raigad district at Gharapuri Island.

So, We're Saying…

It’s no longer going to be a day trip on the island. You can be part of history during the day, and possibly enjoy the tranquility of the island, while hearing the waves at night.
