Start Planning: There's A Fireflies Festival Happening In Purushwadi In June

    Nupur posted on 03 March

It’s straight out of a fairy tale. Purushwadi is home to millions of fireflies and these magical creatures form a spectacle of sorts during their mating season.

Music festivals can take a breather ’cause the Purushwadi had an official fireflies festival that happens in May. So, here we are, helping you plan in advance. Apply for those leaves, people.

    Where Is It?

Located about 200 kms from Mumbai, the village has been adopted by an organisation called Grassroutes, which has been taking care of the village’s tourism for the past five years. It falls under the Akole block of District Ahmednagar and is inhabited by the ‘Hindu Mahadeo Koli’ tribe who are rice cultivators and skilled animal herdsmen.

    How Do I Get There?

Hiring a car or taking your own is the easiest and fastest way to get there. Yo can make a stop at Igatpuri. The nearest stations are Kasara {90-100 km away} and Igatpuri {80-90 km away}. From either of the stations, you can hop on to a bus or a jeep to Rajur petrol pump and from there on a jeep to get to this wonder of nature.

    What Is Unique About It?

The sight of fireflies is almost like a scene from Avatar. If you want to see the fireflies hover over like magic, Purushwadi is where you should be.

    Don’t Leave Home Without…

Sunscreen, toiletries and a rain coat if it’s raining. You know, the weather is unpredictable during that time. Grassroutes curates the whole experience and you can check out their website here.
