Have you been planning a trip to Goa or the Andamans soon and want to skip the scuba diving training so you can directly jump into the water? Then check out the two schools in Mumbai that’ll train you how to scuba dive, and by the end of it, you’ll be certified to test out your skills in the open vast sea or ocean {we’re trying to avoid the Jaws references here}.

Orca Diving School

Orca Diving School, run by instructor Anees Adenwala, will teach you the basics of diving in confined water – that is in the swimming pool called ‘Confined water course’.

This is for beginners {years 12 and above} to kick start your training for scuba diving. Certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors {PADI}, the confined water course includes your SCUBA equipment, four dive sessions, instructor fee and the pool charges.

You will learn to dive in a pool, how to use your scuba kit which includes a scuba tank which is filled with compressed air – Buoyancy Control Device {BCD} and a regulator. Diving involves a lot of knowledge before one steps into the open, so it’s important to cover all bases, know your signs under water and of course, be fully aware of the things you need to care of. Once the session is completed, you also have to give a test. The instructor will guide you at each step – so don’t worry.

Price: Test session {INR 3,000}, Full training {INR 11,450}

Westcoast Adventures

Westcoast Adventures has centers around India, with an Inland Dive Center in Mumbai, Vile Parle East. The training sessions take place at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Gymkhana on weekends. They offer two options, Try Dive, which is a 1.5 hour program in the swimming pool that gets you familiar with the equipment, basic hand signals and dos and dont's at INR 3,500 + tax.

If you find you loved the experience and are planning a dive vacay, they also offer a 4-day certification course. The first two days take place in Mumbai with theory and pool training in confined water at INR 16,500 + tax. For the last 2 days of the course, you are required to undertake 4 dives which can be in your own time, or for an additional 14,500 + tax at their other centres at Goa and Karnaraka.

Dive India

Dive India is originally based out of the Andamans with bases at Neil and Havelock. However, they also have training centers in Mumbai where you can try diving out with an introductory course in confined water with instructors. The PADI Discover Scuba Diving starts at INR 4,500 + tax and you'll learn basic theory, skills and diving. They also offer a PADI OPen Water Pool Training course at INR 10,500 + tax that will get you diving ready in 2 days.

Training is offered at the Fr Agnel Swimming Pool in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Classes need to be booked ahead and medical details need to be shared prior to any training.
