Joseph Bar Goa: A Hidden Gem For Nostalgic Vibes And Local Feni

What Makes It Awesome

Most of us remain very limited with our choices when we visit Goa – Infanteria, Curlies, Brittos, Titos. What if we tell you there are more beautiful and lively spots that have completely missed your gaze? In the midst of a Latin part of Panjim, the capital of Goa, lies an area named Fountainhas, and in the heart of that a small bar named Joseph.

For a piece of true Goan and history and culture, one must go to Joseph Bar Goa – away from the crowd-drawing spots. At the centre of this quaint Latin Quarter, the bar gives you a taste of the old-world charm and a snap of Goan tavern culture.

Coming up from the '70s, Joseph Bar was almost closed in 2017 when Atish Antonio Fernandes took charge in restoring this piece of Goan legacy. The rustic treat of the interiors is filled with trophies of an old watch shop, thick glass bottles of soda, and walls where visitors comment. This is as real a thing as you could ever get for those who long for the simple good times.

What To Do At Joseph Bar

Given a handful of inside seating and a couple of outdoor tables spilling onto the quiet bylanes, this no-frills spot stays vibrant. Gundu, the legendary, humor-filled barman, is known for making everyone feel at home. Gundu is very popular as a server here at Joseph Bar Goa, he even remembers regular's orders. Ladies, at Joseph Bar Panjim, are even greeted with a rose upon arrival.

Staying true to its tavern origins, Joseph Bar works with some great local drinks. You can shout for feni from trusted local producers, their signature drink being the Tambde Rosa — a kokum, rose, and feni cocktail; or dive into Goan craft beer and gin. A small food menu features mouthwatering options, such as beef or chicken samosas, fish cutlet or an egg or chicken dish.

People say Joseph Bar Panjim is an ode to Goa's timeless tavern culture. It’s not just a bar but an experience that brings people together. It offers a taste of authentic Goan life in the heart of Fontainhas.
